Summer
course at the University of Ceske Budejovice
19 – 24 September 2004
After
the very succesful PhD course on the restoration of wet grasland held at the
University of Bremen in 2003 we decided to organize a similar course on heavily spoilt mining areas. This course is
primarily intended for PhD students who work in the field of restoration ecology
of mining areas, but is also open for people who work on the restoration of
other ecosystems. The program includes:
-
lectures of specialists during the morning to provide theoretical background;
-
practical work during the afternoon to train restoration-related research skills;
- short
presentations of research projects by the participants.
The
practical work will consist of, for example, using multivariate techniques,
analysing maps and estimating restoration prospects, role plays to experience
conflicts over restoration targets. Apart from that, much time is reserved for
presenting and discussing the projects of the participants. Finally, restored
sites and sites with ongoing restoration will be visited.
Venue
The course will be held in the town of Sokolov, in the western part of the Czech Republic, ca. 150 km west from the capital Prague (see maps of the country on http://mapy.atlas.cz. The town is located just in the centre of one of two coal mining districts in the country.
Lecture
rooms and computer facilities will be located at the Hotel
Parkhotel Sokolov in the Sokolov.
